HUM 1013, Fall 2022 Art Analysis Paper Due Date: 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 28th Description of the assignment: To complete the assignment, you must visit the Norton Museum, which is located just south of campus (1451 S Olive Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33401). You will write and submit a 3-4 page paper analyzing one specific painting or sculpture that you observe there. Remember that this is primarily an original analysis, not a research paper, and that the piece you choose must fit into the subject of humanities (Western civilization).

Your analysis should be grounded in material presented in class: general and/or specific characteristics of Western civilization. Specific instructions: In introducing the piece itself, you should give a thorough description: describe the relative size and placement of figures or objects in it, describe the use of color and perspective, and note anything else that you find remarkable. (What is happening in the piece?) Then, offer your analysis. You should make observations about what you see and connect those observations to ideas presented in Humanities I. Note whether it resembles art we studied in class.

If so, how? Explain any symbolism and/or messages (religious, political, etc.) that the piece contains. (What does the piece mean?) Formatting: Your paper should be 3-4 pages, typed, with 1-inch margins and page numbers, double-spaced with standard font. It must be submitted electronically through Turnitin (more instructions to follow re: TurnItIn) in order to be accepted. You should not include a cover page or any unnecessary spaces between paragraphs. You should include the name of the piece, and its artist, in your paper’s heading or title.

You must include a picture of yourself with the piece of art that you describe. Without this picture, your paper will not be accepted. All sources used should be cited in MLA format, and failure to cite a source is plagiarism. However, outside sources are not necessary and should be used sparingly. Extensive reliance on other sources and an absence of original analysis will result in a significantly lower grade. https://youtu.be/jV-hcRpYHLs
