Course Paper Information Paper 1 For Paper 1 you will address 4 areas: the historical context of the film, the major ideas and issues presented, a major sociological perspective for film interpretation, and the film’s purpose. This paper should be about 2-3 pages in length. Description of Content Areas Historical Context (25 points): Historical context refers to the immediate social and historical factors that shape life in a given time period. Draw from the historical period depicted in the film. Consider the following questions (this does not mean that you have to directly answer each question): What is the time period (year, era) within the film?
Historical context of a film
How does the film reflect (or not) the social context of that time period? Discuss any relevant major events that took place during the time period, that influence or shape the film content. What were some of the beliefs, norms, and values (culture) of the time period? How does the culture of the time period impact the behavior and ideas presented in the film? If using a futuristic film, use the current time period (2022) to make assumptions about why the “future” looks the way that it does in the film. Refer to relevant events, culture, and ideologies of our current time period that have shaped the depiction of the future.

Cite the source(s) in the text of this section. Major Sociological Perspective (25 points): Identify a major sociological perspective (functionalist, symbolic interaction, conflict, feminist) that aligns best with the film. Discuss how the perspective can be used to interpret and analyze the film. It is recommended that you choose only one theory and explore it in depth. Consider the following questions (you do not have to directly answer each of the questions): How would the film be described using the perspective of your chosen theory?
