Should high school students be allowed to have their cellphone with them during school? This is a persuasive speech. But for this assignment, we’re going to outline and draft the content and structure it to fully prepare ourselves to eventually deliver it next week. This speech will stress the development of a sound argument in support of a contested thesis on a timely topic and something that you feel represents a problem that needs action. HINT: If you have ever written a persuasive or a problem/solution essay, this speech is very similar.

Try to pick issues with which your audience may not be familiar or on which they have not yet made up their minds. Address the major opposing viewpoints and offer reasoning and evidence in support of your position. Your thesis should be free of blatant fallacies. PART ONE: Craft an outline that (1) establishes the existence of a problem in the minds of your audience and (2) offers a clear and explicit set of actions that your audience can take to help resolve the matter. You need a well-organized message that reflects a clear sense of purpose. Try to focus on something tangible your audience can actually do something about.

Speeches addressing local or campus-related issues can be very effective. Incorporate strategies for involving your audience. The main points of your speech should be arranged in an appropriate persuasive design (see textbook – then, say in your outline which model you used and give the page number). Your outline should contain at least three different points of view (perspectives) and five sources. These sources must come from the Northwestern College Library and/or the Northwestern College Library Databases.
