The objective of this assignment is to reflect on the main issues associated with climate change vulnerability or adaptation and to study an aspect of these topics in depth. It is strongly recommended that in the essay, you should build on the climate impacts assessment assignment conducted during the first half of the module by identifying an adaptation or vulnerability issue that is related to the topic of your climate impact analysis–i.e. you should select a topic related to the same sector or geographic region, etc. as your climate impact assessment.

Climate change vulnerability.

This will enable you to more effectively integrate considerations of climate impacts, vulnerability and adaptation in a holistic manner and to more deeply explore the topic, since you will already have a working knowledge of issues in this area. If you decide that you would like to address a different topic in your climate change essay than that of your climate impact assessment, please first discuss this with the module leaders before doing so. While you are asked to build upon your climate impact assessment project, you will have considerable freedom to tailor your essay to your specific interests.

Climate change vulnerability.

You will be asked to identify and develop the essay title yourself. In so doing, you will have to become familiar with the scope of the literature. This essay should be considered as an opportunity to further explore one aspect of the topics covered in weeks 5-10. The essay should also reference key concepts and dimensions of climate impacts and their relevance to vulnerability and adaptation where relevant. We would advise that students look at the syllabus and identify the main themes that will be taught in weeks 5-10 to help them guide the selection of their topic.

Climate change vulnerability.

Please keep the essay within the word count limit (see Assessments & Dates, and Coursework Submission sections) and indicate the final word count on the first page. Exceeding the word count by more than 10 percent of the limit will be considered to detract from its quality. Word count excludes references. Please include student number on your submission in the upper right hand side and module number in the upper left hand side in the header. You are expected to do the following:1.Identify one aspect of vulnerability or adaptation to climate change for your assignment.

Climate change vulnerability.

If you focus on vulnerability, this could involve you assessing the vulnerability of the region/sector you studied for assignment 1, using one of the conceptual approaches and methodologies described in class (e.g. outcome vulnerability approach or political ecology). If you focus on adaptation, this could involve you developing an adaptation plan for the region/sector you studied for assignment 1, developing the plan according to one of the approaches to adaptation described in class (e.g top-down or bottom-up approaches).

2.Avoid answering too broad a question. As described above, your essay should build upon your climate impact assessment, narrowing that topic to a specific focus within a specific context, e.g. coasts, rivers, food systems, Africa, small islands, Arctic, UK etc. This will help you to avoid selecting an overly broad topic. Think about exploring the area of adaptation or vulnerability in which you have an interest and then try to apply the concepts and dimensions mentioned above.
