BSAD101. Challenges of current external economic factors (2 pgs.) You are the owner of a small pizza restaurant that has endured financial loss during the COVID- 19 pandemic, and the recent inflationary shift in the U.S. economy post-pandemic. Prior to March 2020, your business was averaging $30,000 in monthly revenue, with an average monthly profit of $10,000. During the height of the pandemic, your business declined by 60% – creating a tremendous challenge to meeting the financial demands of the business. By employing a little creativity, you began to provide carryout and delivery orders to your customers.

Current external economic factors.

In the summer of 2021, your business started to rebound and slowly the company began generating 70% of the revenue earned pre-pandemic and returned to in-person dining.  By the spring of 2022 the business began to see new challenges with reduced availability and increased cost of supplies necessary to run your business. Employees were hard to find – and even harder to keep – and, once again, sales started slowing down. One of the ways to fully grasp the various economic conditions that are affecting your business is by reading the textbook and the links provided below. Pandemic and its Impact

ENG 101 Essay 2: Writing to Inform: Researching in the Pandemic and its Impact on a Discipline. 300 points (30% of course grade) Length: 2,000-2,500 words, about 7-8 typed, double-spaced pages. Purpose: For this paper, you will combine and integrate information from multiple sources to write an informative report that provides your readers with a broad understanding of a debate about how COVID has impacted your field of study or other area of interest. You will need to research a wide variety of sources (e.g. books, periodicals, newspapers, and web sites) that relate directly to the topic and find the similarities and the differences among those sources in terms of the points at issue in the debate.

Pandemic and its Impact

Instead of a direct argument about one side of the topic, your essay should present a more far-reaching perspective, examining many perspectives and branching out into related issues that help shed light on the topic. As you write about this topic, you will enhance many of the skills introduced earlier in the semester, including the use of summary, paraphrase, and quotation to establish the context of the debate or controversy as well as reinforce the critical thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and source citation. Try to explore as many different sides of the issue as feasible. In other words, your essay should answer the question, “How has COVID impacted my field of study?”

Pandemic and its Impact

The purpose of this assignment is NOT for you to take a side and argue for it. Importantly, you will need to offer a neutral report on this debate without taking sides, but you must also demonstrate to your audience why they should care about this topic, what’s important and significant about it for our society and your field. Audience: College-educated adults from ages 19-99 who may not be familiar with your topic. Developing a Thesis: You will eventually need a thesis, a point, for your essay, and most thesis statements appear somewhere in the introduction portion of a text.

Pandemic and its Impact

However, just because the thesis goes at the beginning of the paper, that does not mean you should narrow in on a thesis at the beginning of your research and writing process. The challenge of synthesis is to wait to develop a thesis until the end of your research and prewriting process. Through your research, you should notice the ways in which your sources agree and disagree: your debate will inevitably be more complicated than it seems at first glance. When those points of agreement and disagreement come up, stated in various ways, in several sources, you should be able to pin down the major points of debate within your overall topic.

Pandemic and its Impact

If you can write down those major points of debate in your own words, you should be able to craft them into a thesis that reflects those major points of debate. Sources: Use 5-8 sources representing a variety of ideas about the topic. At least 3 of your sources must come from one of the library’s databases of academically-credible sources. No more than two of your sources may be web sites, and any web sites used must meet the standards of credibility presented in class. Be careful about using blog posts, and avoid wikis as sources but feel free to use them to direct you toward other sources. https://youtu.be/ihSlDvQwHdg

Supply and Demand.

COVID/ Supply and Demand Paper details: Part 1- Microeconomics is often described as about the “little picture” as opposed to the big picture view of macroeconomics, but that view is over simplistic. Here is an example from microeconomics even though it is definitely big picture. Consider the pandemic, which induced huge changes in consumer behavior. Take restaurants for example. Many restaurants closed, usually temporarily. Those that remained open suffered three big problems: customers feared catching covid from eating there and waitstaff worried about catching covid from working there.

Supply and Demand.

Chefs worried about supply-chain disruptions to food ingredients. Show, using supply and demand graphs if possible, how these developments affected the restaurant business. Part 3- Go to the internet and find a news article from a daily newspaper published within the last month that discusses changes in demand and supply of particular goods/services, summarize key points and post in the Discussions area. Please do not use an article related directly to covid. Refer to week 2 content materials and use specific economic vocabulary within your summary, i.e. demand, quantity demanded, determinants of demand, shifts in demand curve, etc. Likewise with supply.

Supply and Demand.

Also, you should discuss changes in equilibrium quantity and equilibrium price. The article you choose may not use these exact terms; therefore, it is incumbent upon you to convert the article language into economic language as is appropriate. Please note that the goal of this assignment is to read, understand, and discuss recent news using microeconomic terminology. The article should be from an on-line newspaper or magazine. Materials posted on educational websites, like www.thebalance.com, www.khanacademy.org , and so on, are not considered news articles even if they were recently updated and contain material related to the discussion topic. https://youtu.be/kIFBaaPJUO0
