Paper details Individual Reflexive Language Analysis (400-500 words) Explore one of your digital space/social media platforms and evaluate it for communication modalities (i.e. greetings, terms of address, “proper” language, slang, cursing, emoji‘s GIF’s , memes, pictures, etc.) Compare and contrast your language/communication varieties by exploring your regular interactions with different audience members in digital space/social media. Among other things, you may wish to consider some of the following: How do you use written text, images, GIF’s, etc. to comport yourself and convey different messages?

How do you use these mediums to convey different aspects of your personality? What similarities, if any, exist? What differences, if any, exist? What kinds of language choices do you make? Do you switch registers, dialects, codes or languages? When? Why? With whom? When and how do you shift your messages? For what purpose? You may also wish to consider if/how other variables such as identity (culture, gender identity, age, etc.), topic/context, etc. influence your participation. In evaluating your various forms of communication, observe the shifts that you make (formal/informal, “proper”/“not proper,” text/image) and begin to ask yourself what drives your choices in each instance?

Upon reflection, have you always made the right choice (i.e. did you ever use very causal language when you should have used formal langue, etc.)? Discuss and explain. Is there anything you would change? Discuss and explain. What kinds of communication are allowed and not allowed? Should you have a formal greeting? Is perfect spelling expected? Are you allowed/expected to use slang/curse words? Are you allowed/expected to use emojis, GIF’s, etc. Also, discuss HOW you came to know these things? Which were formally taught to you?
