Comparison and Contrast Assignment. For this as paper, you will choose one of the topics below and write a comparison and contrast paper in order to evaluate. THIS MEANS YOU MUST MAKE A VALUE JUDGMENT. Your thesis will be which of your subjects is better and why. Be careful to set up the criteria (points for discussion/comparison/contrast) fairly, apply them to both subjects, and be specific about how both subjects meet the criteria (points for discussion/comparison/contrast) you discuss. You may not deviate from the assigned topics or use outside sources as doing either will result in failure of the assignment.

All of your ideas must come from your own knowledge of the topic. Characteristics that will enhance your paper include showing your reader rather than telling (i.e. “Downshifting”), being specific, using strong verbs, appealing to more than just visual where appropriate, having a clear, controlling idea/thesis statement that incorporates a value judgment, forecasting, and proper structure. Make sure you pay particular attention to your organization—point-by-point or subject-by-subject—and use the same points for discussion (criteria) to evaluate both subjects. (Refer to pp. 373-376 in your Patterns book).
