The outline will include: – a draft of your introduction, an outline of the essay content—organized by headings (and subheadings if required), – a graphic that you will include in the essay (e.g. location map, a table, a graph, a photograph), – your full CMS style bibliography (not annotated). Grading: Where this is an outline, I expect you to use jot notes (point form) rather than complete sentences – with the exception of your introduction which will be fully drafted. Introduction The introduction is worth 2 points. It should be free of grammatical or spelling errors, and clearly convey the following. Your topic (your research question). Your position (your thesis statement, or, the general sense of the answer of your question). How your essay will be organized (the “road map”) Your writing should be clear, concise, and reflect yourself.

If you can say something with one word or the same thing with five words, use one. Do not engage in jargon for the sake of “sounding smarter.” Natural, yet formal, writing will be most engaging. Avoid contractions to maintain a formal tone. Avoid the passive voice and assign agency to those who earn it. Be assertive; do not couch your language in safety nets. You are not “going to write about” (for example)… you are writing! Format Your formatting is worth 2 points. There are a variety of ways to approach the formatting of the outline, but you will use headers (and possibly sub-headers) that show a clear at-a-glance view of the structure of your essay and arguments. Be clear and consistent in your outline.

Bibliography Your bibliography is worth 2 points. At this point, it should mostly be able to be copied and pasted from previous assignments. These should be easy points for you. Any mistakes in your bibliography will be severely deducted. This is a Chicago Manual of Style, Notes-Bibliography formatted bibliography. Your use of quotations is worth 1 point. You will include quotations in your outline; not all for your paper necessarily, but you should have quotations included. Directly under any quotation used, include a CMS footnote-style citation.

(NOTE: This is not a true footnote, as you will note place it at the bottom of the page in the outline. But you will for the final paper.) Content The content of your outline will be scored out of 3 points. Despite this, this is the most important part of the outline. You should have a clear indication of your argument and the structure of your support for that argument. I anticipate more than a description of your topic, but a critical engagement.
