Genres – Harry Potter fandom Analysis

Genres tell us things about those who use them. As you consider a rhetorical situation that interests you in (popular or otherwise. Consider the appeals, features, and conventions that matter the most in that area. For instance, if you were to analyze “Harry Potter fandom”. What appeals (ethos, pathos, or logos) are important for this book?. What features (themes, diction, characters) are used to write books like Harry Potter?. Your analysis is designed to help audiences better understand the genre. The first thing you want to do is select a sample of the genre (i.e. a book excerpt, movie script excerpt, images, videos, lyrics, etc.) and identify what sets this sample apart in its genre.

Your essay should be 3 to 4 pages and MLA formatted. Typed, Times News Roman, double-spaced, set at 1 inch margins, justified “left” or “full,” and 12 point font. It should contain at least two sources about a topic that is relevant in your field term and a Works Cited.    For Basics of Good Genre Analysis It identifies the context surrounding your topic It analyzes how genre affects your topic It explores how genre patterns serve rhetorical purposes It thinks about how communication is carried out in your topic and/or applies to your topic  STEP-BY-STEP Locate and cite 2 articles that discuss a particular issue in your academic field or discipline (i.e. Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Applied Fields).

Try searching the library website or the general Web for scholarly. Also check popular articles related to the scenarios in which people communicate within your field. They include historians, sociologists, scientists, doctor-patient, engineering, teacher-student, etc.

Further Guidelines

To begin with discuss the situation of the genre. Setting. Firstly where did you find your articles?. Secondly what other articles did they publish in the same issue or journal?. Consequently how did you access your articles?.  Subject: What topic(s) are do they discuss in your articles?. Therefore what issues, ideas, questions do they address?. When people read these articles, what are they discussing?  Participants: Who typically reads the journal?. Who will  develop interest in these articles? What characteristics must readers of your genre possess?. Who writes texts in this genre? Who are the authors (this might require you to do some outside research on the authors)?.

Features: What recurrent features do the articles share? For example, what content is typically included?. What is excluded? Firstly how is the content treated?. Secondly how is evidence provided?. Thirdly how are sources cited?. In addition what sorts of examples are used? . Finally what counts as evidence (personal testimony or facts)?.
