Description

Make sure your name is on the essay. Directions The essay is 40pts. It is open-note and open-book. The work should be your own original work. You may discuss the prompt with others in the brainstorming phase of preparing your answer. Also you may discuss broad and formal questions with your TAs, including what the prompt is asking and strategies for developing a complete answer. You may also ask your TAs particular questions to clarify passages of the texts.
TAs Assignment guidelines
The TAs have the instruction not to comment on the specifics of your argument. It should be 3-4 pages in length. The essay should have a thesis that organizes its argument. Avoid general and vague summary of the texts. Use specific examples from the texts to support your argument. Short quotations are useful for anchoring your claims, but not required. The best arguments will discuss not only what the texts say, but also why they take that particular view.
Question In Gorgias, Socrates asks, “Will you be persuaded by me?” (527d). Do you agree with Socrates that being virtuous is the key to leading a good or happy life? Note: While, ultimately, we are asking what you think, your response must engage with the course material and the TAs . A complete answer will include the following: (a) consideration of Socrates’ argument and the argument to which it is opposed, (b) use of Plato’s Apology and Gorgias and one other text from the course, and (c) finally, your answer should include why, through a consideration of the evidence you present, you hold the opinion you do.
