Understanding how to implement change in organizations is critical. An inability to change leads to an inability to stay viable. Organizations must be able to respond effectively and rapidly to changes in their external environment by implementing changes in their internal environment. But change does not come easily, and there are many barriers that have to be dealt with in order to implement change successfully. In this assignment you are to identify five barriers to change. For each barrier, explain why it interferes with change and describe the actions you would take to overcome the barrier.

Below are guidelines/outline to help you prepare your Research Paper.

1) Introduction

Describe what you are going to write about and do or accomplish in this paper.

2) Target Organization – Description of Challenges/Problems

Identify and briefly describe an organization of your choice that needs to change.  Find a good case study such as one in the news as Sears, Radio Shack, Volkswagen, Samsung, etc.  You can find a case study in the library.  Briefly specify what is going wrong in the organization and what needs to be improved, changed or stopped to make the firm operate better.

3) Visualizing the Need for Organizational Change

Describe, illustrate and visualize the need for organizational change using Lewin’s 3 phase model of change field or another model such as Kotter’s model to illustrate the organizational tension of moving toward change and the resistance to change.  Make sure you identify the forces/factors pushing the change, and identify those pushing against change.  You may email me if you think you need to discuss your match of organizational problem to change model used.

4) Barriers to Change and Analysis

Identify and describe at least five barriers to change that have to be dealt with in order to implement change successfully.  For each barrier, explain why it interferes with change and describe the actions you would take to overcome the barrier.

5)  Recommendations

Describe what organization development intervention you would use to implement and guide the organizational change improvement process.

Please note:  Your paper should be about 10 pages (about 2,500 words)excluding the cover sheet, graphics & reference list.  Be certain to cite all sources appropriately using APA formatting and style, and use the third person.

Use appropriate and credible source material and integrate applicable concepts from the textbooks and course material. The bulk of your research should be done using the UMUC databases.  Remember, I am looking for demonstration of your new expertise in application of management, leadership, and organizational design.  In addition, the Writing Rubric (same one that has been used on other class papers) will also be used in accessing your paper.  A copy of this rubric can be found under the Course Content section of the class.

It is recommended that you utilize important concepts from the course to organize your presentation and provide context for the exposition of your source material.

Do not include Wikipedia or non-scholarly source materials as references.  You should have at least 5 references; 3 of the references should be academic journals. Your Paper should be at least 10 Pages long.
