Please respond to these questions, 1. Hello, During an IEP meeting when a conflict begins to develop a good strategy to practice is active listening. In a situation were a parent is frustrated maybe it is because they do not understand or may have a question. With all the information that is being shared it can be overwhelming. Pause the meeting from time to time to ask if everyone is ok or any questions. This will be proactive so each person feels that they are being heard. Contributing to the goal and establishing up to date data is critical in this meeting. Keeping everyone on task and provide an Outline of the meeting and who will be attending and position.

Provide paper and pencils to take notes in case they were misplaced before hand. This also helps to keep the meeting flowing and organized. Blessings, 2. Ultimately, we are trying to recruit the parent onto “team kid”. I have found that conflicts often arise when the parent does not feel heard or feels “ganged up on”. This is where the relationship building that the SPED teacher does from day one with parents so that before the meeting even starts potential conflicts are diffused because the parent has been heard and everyone in the room is on “team kid”.

One strategy that I would use is that if the meeting is going in a direction that is not healthy then I would stop the meeting and let the parent know that we need to gather more data about the core of the conflict and then schedule another meeting when the data has been collected or if necessary another professional can be consulted. https://youtu.be/D–X9-726bk
