Modes of Resistance
Exploring Resistance: (movie Belle 2013) Modes of Resistance: Confronting the Status Quo In Belle, director Amma Asante creates a visual narrative that captures the indignities of womanhood in 19th century Britain. Using a screenplay written by Misan Sagay, and loosely based on historical events, Asante also explores the tension experienced by all layers of society vis a vis the African victims of the slavery. The film not only reflects the raw economics of the slave trade, it also questions the role, or perhaps category, into which people of color are placed.
Modes of Resistance
In the film, Dido Belle, the Lord Chief Justice of England, and young lawyer John Davinier challenge the status quo, questioning the easy categories people in power have created for people of color, people without land, wealth or title, and for women. Watch the movie, and then write a 3-4 page response in which you explore modes of resistance against gendered, class or racial injustice presented in the film. Do not merely summarize the plot. Rather, using everything you have learned this semester about resistance and oppression, make a central claim that addresses the way in which one of these characters resists.
Modes of Resistance
(Alternately, you could focus on ONE approach to resistance, across many characters). Either way, articulate a thoughtful claim and then defend it as true! Great papers will offer 2-4 specific examples of the impact this strategy has on power dynamics, community, society and/or the law (both in the short term and in the long run). https://youtu.be/bRPBeBsSFOs
