Problem statement and specific aims

Overview: Once your literature review has uncovered a problem, you need to come up with a clear problem statement and specific aims , an “overarching” purpose for the DNP group projects/your project, and very specific aims for your study.

ASSIGNMENT: PROBLEM STATEMENT AND SPECIFIC AIMS Overview: Once your literature review has uncovered a problem, you need to come up with a clear and succinct statement of the problem, an “overarching” purpose for the DNP group projects/your project, and very specific aims for your study. The specific aim of your study NEED NOT solve the problem…but only “move the needle” in the direction of the solution. Purpose: The purpose of the assignment is to clearly articulate the clinical problem. The problem statement logically follows a synthesis of the relevant literature on the topic and the significance of that topic as described in the literature.

Problem statement and specific aims

The problem statement can be up to three sentences. Think of the problem statement as “what is the issue that needs to be addressed”. Once the problem has been stated, the overarching purpose and specific aims must be stated. The overarching purpose should be one sentence. Each specific aim should be stated in one sentence and must be measurable. You will need to consider the statistical analysis that you will be targeting to develop your results. Remember…this is a DRAFT document! You need to develop a submission where the basic format is correct, however it is possible that you change your measured variables as the project unfolds, and thereby need to change your specific aim(s).

Assignment Overview For this assignment, you are expected to draft a statement of the problem, the overarching purpose, and the specific aims for your project. The identified problem should stem from the literature which supports the clinical problem you have identified. You should then identify the overarching purpose and REALISTIC specific measurable aims of the proposed study. (Assume that you will have between 20 and 40 subjects for your study.) Process: 1) Read assignment instructions completely (and request clarification) until you are confident with the instructions.

2) Refer back to the background and significance paper you previously submitted. This will help you summarize your argument to present the problem statement and aims. Be sure to include: i. The problem statement (no more than three sentences) ii. The overarching purpose (one sentence) iii. The specific aim(s) a. Limit to two b. Must be precise and measurable c. Must include a proposed bivariable or multivariable statistical test that matches the proposed aim. 3) BRIEF EXAMPLE: Problem statement: Flu continues to be a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in the United States, with peak incidence during the winter months.

Problem statement and specific aims

Flu is a particular problem among health care providers, as sickness during the winter months significantly impacts the December holiday and vacation schedule. Overarching purpose: The overarching purpose of this study is to develop methods to incentivize healthcare providers to reduce their risk of flu, so that there is minimal disruption in the December holiday work schedule. Specific Aim 1: The first specific aim of this project is to examine the rate of flu disease between health care providers who did and did not receive the annual flu vaccination in 2020.

Use a t-test analysis to examine the relationship between the incidence of flu (comparison of rates) between these groups. Specific Aim 2: The second specific aim of this project is to examine the association between employer-provided vaccination in 2020 and flu vaccination in 2020 in healthcare providers. I will use Chi Square analysis to examine if there is a relationship between employer-provided vaccination (categorical: yes/no) and flu vaccination (categorical: yes/no). ***Refer to your statistics coursework! Test for associations and correlations call for Pearson (or non-parametric equivalent) analysis.

Tests of differences call for T-test (or non-parametric equivalent) analysis. (Tests to establish causation require randomization and are not going to be an outcome of a cross-sectional survey!) Be very careful with how you PHRASE your specific aim as this will directly relate to the statistical analysis that is referenced! 4) Give your submission an appropriate title; 5) Use these additional standard APA format elements: a. Double-space; b. 1- inch margins; c. Times New Roman 12-point font; d. Title page (student version); e. Running header (please include with student version title page); f. Pagination. 6) Remember not to exceed the length requirement.

Problem statement and specific aims

Your submission (excluding title page and References page) should not exceed 1 page. 7) You may discuss the assignment with your classmates, but every student should submit their own, unique paper. 8) Consider scheduling a ZOOM “read aloud” meeting with peers (https://www.zoom.us/) to get and give feedback on draft paper. Consider bringing your draft paper to Academic Support Services at Downstate University or a hospital-affiliated university writing center. https://youtu.be/DpDBMI8hrOY

9) Revise your draft papers following proofreading/peer review, taking into consideration but not necessarily incorporating the comments and feedback you received. 10) Submit your final paper by the deadline, in Microsoft Word format, using the appropriate Blackboard file attachment link. Save a copy of your assignment versions in your electronic files. If you cannot meet the deadline, please inform me.
