The topic is American Born Chinese. For your first paper I want you to identify a problem and tell me how it could be fixed. First, identify a problem in American Born Chinese and tell me about it. Remember I have no knowledge of the problem you are describing, so you will have to describe it well. Please be clear, but try not to include too much detail as you explain it in the introduction. Save your good examples for the body paragraphs, which usually come in the middle of the paper.

After you have done this, I would like you to write a thesis sentence that makes a claim that is arguable. It should be something that others could dispute; it is your opinion.

Use the template below to work out a thesis. Problem Solution Papers should i. describe the problem, ii. convince the reader the problem needs solving, iii. explain the solution proposal, iv. argue that yours is the best solution, & v. refute objections. (These are all clipped from the website, and may not all apply to Yang’s novel, but I have tried to inspire you within this dry abstract framework. It might be impossible to do all 5 in a 600 word paper, but you should know which one you are leaving out.)

Kearney’s Article Includes Finding a Good Topic Deciding on the Best Solution How to Write an Excellent Essay Effective Writing Tips for Problem Solution Essays To write a persuasive solution essay, you need to organize carefully.

Your main goals are to: 1. Interest your reader in the problem 2. Convince your reader that the problem is important and needs to be solved 3. Explain your solution clearly 4. Convince the reader that your solution is feasible 5. Convince your reader that your solution is better than other solutions While the OWL website I got this from is very good and thorough, you can use this assignment as a shortcut. I think that 1 & 2 could be handled in the intro before the thesis, 3 should be a body paragraph with a good example of something that excites you, 4 should have a good example, and I do not see the need for #4 in a 600 word essay. https://youtu.be/4zaSE5CRk70

ENG 101 Essay 2: Writing to Inform: Researching in the Pandemic and its Impact on a Discipline. 300 points (30% of course grade) Length: 2,000-2,500 words, about 7-8 typed, double-spaced pages. Purpose: For this paper, you will combine and integrate information from multiple sources to write an informative report that provides your readers with a broad understanding of a debate about how COVID has impacted your field of study or other area of interest. You will need to research a wide variety of sources (e.g. books, periodicals, newspapers, and web sites) that relate directly to the topic and find the similarities and the differences among those sources in terms of the points at issue in the debate.

Pandemic and its Impact

Instead of a direct argument about one side of the topic, your essay should present a more far-reaching perspective, examining many perspectives and branching out into related issues that help shed light on the topic. As you write about this topic, you will enhance many of the skills introduced earlier in the semester, including the use of summary, paraphrase, and quotation to establish the context of the debate or controversy as well as reinforce the critical thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and source citation. Try to explore as many different sides of the issue as feasible. In other words, your essay should answer the question, “How has COVID impacted my field of study?”

Pandemic and its Impact

The purpose of this assignment is NOT for you to take a side and argue for it. Importantly, you will need to offer a neutral report on this debate without taking sides, but you must also demonstrate to your audience why they should care about this topic, what’s important and significant about it for our society and your field. Audience: College-educated adults from ages 19-99 who may not be familiar with your topic. Developing a Thesis: You will eventually need a thesis, a point, for your essay, and most thesis statements appear somewhere in the introduction portion of a text.

Pandemic and its Impact

However, just because the thesis goes at the beginning of the paper, that does not mean you should narrow in on a thesis at the beginning of your research and writing process. The challenge of synthesis is to wait to develop a thesis until the end of your research and prewriting process. Through your research, you should notice the ways in which your sources agree and disagree: your debate will inevitably be more complicated than it seems at first glance. When those points of agreement and disagreement come up, stated in various ways, in several sources, you should be able to pin down the major points of debate within your overall topic.

Pandemic and its Impact

If you can write down those major points of debate in your own words, you should be able to craft them into a thesis that reflects those major points of debate. Sources: Use 5-8 sources representing a variety of ideas about the topic. At least 3 of your sources must come from one of the library’s databases of academically-credible sources. No more than two of your sources may be web sites, and any web sites used must meet the standards of credibility presented in class. Be careful about using blog posts, and avoid wikis as sources but feel free to use them to direct you toward other sources. https://youtu.be/ihSlDvQwHdg

Electric cars and the environment.

Are electric cars better for the environment Paper details: Assignment #3: Research Paper Length: 8 -10 pages either in APA format or MLA format, plus an additional works cited page (yes that means at least nine total pages). Topic Ideas Due: October 12 Rough Draft Due: October 31 Final Draft Due: November 2 In this assignment, you will conduct research to reinforce an argument. You may attempt to change how others feel about a topic, propose changes to an existing situation, or offer a solution to a problem. Preferably, this topic has relevance to your field of study, but it does not have to be.

Electric cars and the environment.

You may choose specific topics that solve problems where you work, or you may attempt to tackle grander themes in your majors/fields. The more specific your topic, the more likely you may want to use primary research such as interviews, field studies or first-hand surveys/polls. You’ll all likely be using statistics, polls and other secondary sources from “experts” to help promote your argument; however, and especially because this is an online course, you may rely solely on secondary research. It is important to establish your topic first. Do some preliminary research and post two potential topic ideas by October 12.

While many of you may choose to prove the existence of a problem, or highlight a problem and propose a solution, you may also use other forms of rhetoric, such as investigative research that may not end up proving what you expected. It’s important to establish an overall research question when considering a topic, in order to develop your criteria and research towards answering that question. You might build your specific topic into the following questions: 1. Why is X a problem and what can be done about it? (Proposal) 2. Is X feasible? (Feasibility study – your research may end up determining that an idea or proposal does not work based on the evidence you uncover)

Electric cars and the environment.

3. Is X or Y (or Z) a better option? (Comparative analysis – this is similar to the first assignment, but based on your own topic idea comparison) 4. How do we use X to our best advantage? Once I’ve accepted your topic, you’ll want to create an outline for the paper that highlights specific criteria you want to investigate. For example, if you decided to write a paper on gun control, such as banning the sale of firearms to people diagnosed with certain types of depression, you might need to investigate various background information and problems with such an idea.

You could evaluate potential solutions before offering your opinion on the issue, or a solution you would like to see implemented.

Electric cars and the environment.

Criteria for gun control might involve issues like cost, organization or likelihood of implementation, societal feelings towards your topic, legal restrictions, etc. Would psychologists be given legal authority to order the confiscation of guns? Does that happen now? Has that happened in other countries? Has it been effective? What proof is there to reinforce your answers to these questions? Criteria tend to be categorized into two branches: What criteria make your argument necessary? What criteria make your argument desirable? You’ll also want to divide your research into logos-based research, involving facts, expert testimony, statistics, scientific observation, etc. Electric cars and the environment.

Or, pathos-based research involving true narratives (either yours or the stories of others you find in your research), anecdotes, quotes from people who have suffered and therefore earned the right to be heard, polls that determine peoples’ opinions, etc. Providing the background and evaluating specific criteria to highlight the themes of your topic will represent approximately half of your paper. At least 1/3 of the paper should be devoted to an effective solution or answer. Why will it work? Has it been tried before (maybe in other companies, states, countries, etc)?  https://youtu.be/0_RRKePSjL4
