Foucault discusses the importance of the confession in sexuality. It begins as a religious ritual that simultaneously demands obedience to a higher power (god/gods/etc) but also a socio-political higher power (religious authority). Over the 18th and 19th centuries, and into the present day, the confession has migrated from a religious ritual to something that underlies a tremendous amount of our social interactions; there are few institutions that do not demand some sort of confession, and individuals are increasingly, more or less voluntarily, turned into self-confessing machines.

We are made to confess to so many, but confession for us also feels like some sort of liberation, freedom, etc., so we take it upon ourselves to confess as well.  The power of the confession is to reveal something hidden, and sex is often something that we consider deeply personal, intimate, and dangerous, so it is hidden, once as sin, but now also as therapy, help, self-curation, etc. That is, through confession, we produce new discourses – new circuits of power-knowledge – that reveal the truth of who we are. Thus, instead of only a discourse of repression, the discourses of sex, multiple and competing as they are, mobilize various new forms of truth, new possibilities for truth.

Reflect on at least one, but as many as you like, experience where you have been made to, or have chosen to, confess something about your sexuality. What were the power relationships? What were the present discourses? Explore and use Foucault’s text and ideas to substantiate your experience(s). https://youtu.be/zByp8lOZxZY

Final Project: Testimonio Analysis In this course, we analyze the important role of testimonios as a methodology and pedagogy of Latina Feminisms, through which women contest traditional historical memory, challenge authoritarian powers, and resist the silence imposed on them through political, social, and economic repression. I encourage you to use both the course materials and outside sources to support your findings. Each final paper will be accompanied by an artistic representation of your findings.

For example, you might create a video presentation using the Kaltura media tools that provides an overview of your final project including your motivations for choosing your testimonio, your methods, your testimonio, and your findings. You may also choose another artistic representation of your findings such as a photo essay, poem, or drawing. This artistic representation should still help to express all the items outlined above for the video. Your selection may be integrated into your analysis or submitted as a separate file. Your artistic representation should be an original work created by you.

Definitions of Testimonio: According to John Beverly (2004), a testimonio is: … told in the first person by a narrator who is also a real protagonist or witness of the event he or she recounts, and whose unit of narration is usually a “life” or a significant life experience…This situation of narration in testimonio has to involve an urgency to communicate, a problem of repression, poverty… the struggle for survival. (30-31) Delgado Bernal, Burciaga, and Flores Carmona (2012), write that testimonio is: …an approach that incorporates political, social, historical, and cultural histories that accompany one’s life experiences as a means to bring about change through consciousness-raising.

In bridging individuals with collective histories of oppression, a story of marginalization is re- centered to elicit social change… Testimonio differs from oral history or autobiography in that it involves the participant in a critical reflection of their personal experience within particular sociopolitical realities. (364) Instructions: 1. Use the 2 testimonios you chose for the project proposal. 2. In your introduction, state why you selected the testimonios. In other words, clearly explain the connections to the course themes you see in the testimonios you have selected.

Remember, this may not be obvious to all readers, as we all have different ways of interpreting data. How did they “speak” to you? Be sure to write a clear, strong thesis statement or question. 3. Draw in support from the testimonio(s) to support your work and clearly explain how it relates to your thesis. Be detailed here—draw in quotes, concepts, contexts, and histories discussed by the participants. 4. Describe the authors’ “urgency to communicate” How do you know this? That is, provide specific examples from the text itself. Consider the authors’ aims and mode of communication (Is it a short story? A poem?). Was this approach effective? Why or why not?

5. Discuss your set of testimonios in relation to at least three readings that you have chosen. Be sure to be clear about how these works inform and support your thesis argument. 6. Include a conclusion that restates your thesis argument or question and how you proved it. 7. Include a bibliography written in Chicago style that includes references for your testimonio(s) and any resource you use outside of the course syllabus. Your final, thesis-driven, well-edited essay should be from 3 -5 pages in length (not including your bibliography), typed, double-spaced in a Times New Roman 12-point font. Please review your work for grammatical and spelling issues.   https://youtu.be/9lfzqIyHpzE
