NUR4001 Service-Learning Leadership Activity Guidelines Students will conduct a service project incorporating leadership principles, Mercy values and Nursing values and skills. This can be a group assignment. Objectives: 1. Enhance social responsibility through participation in a service-learning leadership activity 2. Recognize the connection between social responsibility and service 3. Apply leadership skills, and Mercy and nursing values in a service-learning leadership activity 4. Effectively present the experience in both an oral and written format. For this assignment, you will complete the following: 1. Select an area of service learning that interests you.

See list of prior service-learning projects. 2. Your service is an interactive experience to help people in need. There is a variety of service needs within members of the university community, spiritual community, immediate and surrounding community areas. Be imaginative in your approach. Your choice of serving learning activity must be approved by your Professor prior to beginning the activity. Changes to the service activity must also be approved by the Professor if they occur. This service-learning activity will take approximately 10 hours to complete. 3. There are three graded components to this assignment a. Electronic poster presentation 40%roup work. This Assignment is worth 20% of your grade. Part 1: Poster Presentation This is a visual representation that highlights the service learning experience. It requires writing that is informative, clear and succinct. The use of photographs, illustrations, tables and charts are recommended. You will be provided template options that must be used for this poster. The following information must be included in your poster.

1. The Service Agency (Introduction) Including its title, mission and demographics served, and services needed. If you are not working directly with an agency describe the community, group, or individuals you engaged and discuss how you identified the service need. 2. A summary of your literature review (Background/Context) Review current and relevant professional literature regarding why there is a societal need for this type of agency or community or group. Based on your readings, discuss the causes or explanations for the service need or social justice issue. You must use at least one professional resource.

If you are working with an agency, you may use the agency’s website and must also include at least one other professional article or website to substantiate your discussion. 3: Planning (Intervention) Describe your plan for providing the service activity, including time, budget, and other human resources needed. Discuss the specific leadership and management skills you utilized while planning this activity. 4: Action (Intervention) Explain how the group participated in the service activity; what activity was provided, how it was received, and any barriers that were encountered. Discuss what your group thought when you participated in this service.

Paper details: Consumer-goods companies have set voluntary targets to cut consumer use emissions. For example, Colgate-Palmolive encouraging users to turn off the tap while brushing their teeth or Proctor and Gamble encouraging users to do laundry at cooler temperatures. These consumer use emission targets are showing up in business plans and they are being publicized. This approach requires a company to get the consumer to change their behavior in order to meet the established consumer use emission target.

As you review this approach, write a paper that answers the following questions: What are the overall upsides to this approach for the different consumer goods companies (review the Support for Corporate Social Responsibility section of Chapter 3)? Some downsides to this approach are it is hard to get accurate data and after publicizing the goals not being able to hit them. If you were running one of these consumer-goods companies would you enact this approach, do you believe the upsides outweighs the downsides?

Instructions For this week’s assignment, you need to think about an organization that you have either been a part of, or you will conduct research on a company, and address the following about the company in a two-three page paper. Name of the company and the industry the company operates within Size of the company. Describe the overall culture of the organization, and identify and examine the concepts that you have learned from the week’s readings and lecture. Are there subcultures within the organization? Would you describe the culture as positive or negative? Why? What are some consequences of the culture?

For example, if the culture is negative, is there high turnover and low productivity? How does the organization’s management team affect the organization’s culture? How does the culture of the organization view corporate ethics and social responsibility? Provide specific examples regarding their ethics and social responsibility. What strategies would you recommend to improve the culture in the organization? What has the company done to maintain or improve its culture in the past five years?
