World Geography Concepts

GEOG 17063: World Geography Concepts and Current Events Assignment Due Dates: Nov. 29 (TR section) / Nov. 30 (MW section) Applying Geographic Concepts to World Events. The concepts illustrated throughout this course concretize a complex world of developing events and issues. The goal of this assignment is to help you apply classroom geographic knowledge to real political, economic, and cultural world events. Look out the window at other parts of the world and find that we are all connected and not alone and the material in this course will help you understand an analyze these global connections.

World Geography Concepts

1. Select three news stories from the New York Times. a. You have free access to the NYT through Kent State Libraries: (https://libguides.stark.kent.edu/c.php?g=543482&p=3728818) b. These articles must be published within the dates of the semester (roughly Sept. 1 to Nov. 15 to avoid cramming.) c. The NYT possesses world-regional sections of its content (different organization than our course). Don’t be afraid to regularly search or peruse those sections. d. I strongly advise you to start researching the assignment early in the semester. The best way to find an article is to read the news on a regular basis (daily or least 2-3 times/week) and bookmark possible stories as they interest you.

Then select your best articles as we go through the course and cover those regions and topics. e. Do NOT use opinionated content (listed as “opinion,” “editorial,” or “column,” or if the author’s name starts the article title followed by a colon). Contact me for clarification. 2. Each article must connect 1) a different region as they are listed on the syllabus, to 2) a different course concept. A list of viable concepts is at the end of this guide and on the Illustrated Outlines on Canvas. You may not use the broad course themes. If you want to use a concept not on the list, please contact me. The best projects connect to specific concepts.

World Geography Concepts

3. For each article provide the following: a. A statement from the article that best connects to your chosen concept. Provide the URL of the article here. b. A synopsis of the event that the article covers. c. A definition of the concept you’ve chosen, its context and specific application to this event/article. d. A discussion of the character of the place highlighted in the event/article and how that connects to what we have discussed in class about that location and/or its larger region. To be clear: This assignment will draw from three different articles covering three different events from countries each in a different region (as we define them in class).

World Geography Concepts

Furthermore, you will apply a different concept/theme to each article. Your task is to identify, record, and discuss a key event and apply the concept to it. The assignment is due via Canvas no later than the date specified by the start of our class meeting that day. You have two options: 1. You may submit each article’s discussion separately as you find your articles and write your assessment, by which you could learn from my feedback on an early submission and improve your subsequent submissions.

With this option, your first submission is due by Oct. 27. OR 2. You may submit them as a collection on your section’s due date, which would allow you to see more class material and observe more events and their coverage. https://youtu.be/Twahdp6UP0g
