Description

What role does ecphrasis play in Hellenistic poetry? How does Hellenistic ecphrasis relate to that of earlier Greek literature? This needs to be centered just around epigram. Imp text: Theocritus’ Idylls1 and 15; Herodas Mimiamb 4; and especially the epigrams on ‘Myron’s cow’, from the ninth book of the Palatine Anthology. You are then to follow up on a range of additional Hellenistic Greek texts (Goldhill’s article serves as a nice launchpad), including e.g. Apollonius of Rhodes’ description of the cloak of Jason (Arg. 1.730–67). Please be sure to include all these texts: – Goldhill, S.
