HSEC-360:INTEL. & NATIONAL SECURITY.  Discussion Board Guidance & Rubric The reality of asynchronous online courses is that we can’t all get around a table and talk about the material that we consider each week. To try to mimic this sort of discussion we would have in a live course, each week you will be presented with some questions to write about and discuss with your fellow students. Each week two questions concerning will be posted for you to answer in the discussion board link in the week’s Content & Assignment tab. You will first provide an Initial Post (approximately 150 words) that answers the questions.

Points will be deducted if it is not posted by that date (see rubric). There are no correct answers to these questions. Your Initial Posts will provide you an opportunity to think about these issues and use the material from the videos and reading to provide your perspective on the question. Do your best to use class material to support your perspective. That is the real key to this sort of discussion; it needs to be evidenced base. That’s the difference between academic discourse and a discussion in a bar. In the first, you should share the evidence.

For example, you may believe that Putin invaded Ukraine just as all other Russian rulers have expanded their territory, such as Peter the Great, Catherine, Stalin etc. In the non-evidentiary example, you just provide the statement with no reasons behind it or a simple “because”. In addition to the Initial Post, you will respond to other student’s Initial Posts. You must make a brief summary of the other person’s message and then use this as a springboard for your own comments. You are only allowed to talk about other people’s ideas that are expressed in the thread.

You cannot expand upon your own ideas; you must only talk about your reactions to what someone else has written. The only exception to this rule is if someone else asks you a direct question and you need to expand upon your ideas to answer. In addition to the Initial Post, each student will provide at least two (2) responses to other student’s Initial Posts. That is a minimum; the greater the number of responses the better the grade (see rubric). You are invited to bring in other sources from other classes or the news, as well as your personal experiences to enhance your answers.

Subsequent posts can comment or ask questions or bring in additional information (cited properly). If your post receives a question, please have the courtesy to respond. Providing feedback which essentially says “good post” does not meet the minimum standards. Please review the Rubric for Discussion Boards below to understand the criteria on which you will be assessed. https://youtu.be/eYr_DBDo2do
