Instructions for Newborn Screening Project This assignment is worth 5% of the grade. You will work in groups to examine a disorder that is detected through Newborn Screening. A list of disorders that are tested for in Pennsylvania will be provided. Sign up on this document to work in a group. On the topic line, list the disorder. Each team will present a role play between nurses and new parents of children whose screen was positive for the disorder they selected. This presentation will be given in person. For each team, there will be at least one student acting in the role of nurse and there will be at least one student acting in the role of parent.

Decide among yourselves which role each student will play. Please note that every group member is accountable for helping perform the research on the topic. The group should assemble a fact sheet that includes the following: ● The name and brief description of the disorder ● Cause of the disorder ● Signs and symptoms of the disorder ● Treatment of the disorder. Referrals to resources that can help a child or family with this disorder The students who are acting in the role of nurse will have to communicate this information with sensitivity and knowledge.

Parents will need to ask relevant questions; most parents will want to know the prognosis, the type of care the child will need, and the potential impact on future pregnancies and other family members. Some parents may have concerns about accessing and paying for care. You can be creative – you can incorporate issues related to language, culture, and citizenship. A bonus point will be awarded for integrating the Mercy Values or Critical Concerns. You will have 12 minutes to present to the class.

Even though you are working in a group, each individual student should submit a fact sheet. Highlight your personal contribution in the color of your choice so that I can see how you were accountable to your team.
