In your complete draft, this definitions paragraph will eventually follow your introduction. The definitions paragraph should be one of the first parts of your essay that you draft, and you should revise it as you finalize your analysis and refutations of naysayers’ objections in your other body paragraphs. As with Essay 1, draft your introduction only after you are very certain of what your evidence is and how you are analyzing it in your body paragraphs. As you begin your analysis, keep in mind Jane Desmond’s “Embodying Difference,” especially Desmond’s emphasis on how dance participates in the construction of human identities.

Your thesis statement must answer one of the following questions: • How does the dance you have chosen embody gender identity/identities? • How does the dance you have chosen embody national identity/identities? To build an analytic framework for your interpretation, you must incorporate at least one of the theoretical readings from Unit 2 (on gender or nation) and Anthony Shay’s chapter on the company about whose dance you’ve chosen to write. Your thesis should enter into conversation with Shay’s analysis using the moves from They Say / I Say (yes / no / okay, but…) and/or the moves you learn in your Week 9 group tutorial (see Gaipa handout on Brightspace).

Your analytic framework must also include at least one (but not more than three) peer-reviewed academic journal article(s) from the academic conversation(s) to which your thesis speaks. We will have a workshop on what peer-reviewed journal articles are and how to find them through the NYUAD Library in Week 8. In a robust conclusion for your essay, clearly articulate for your readers the motive for your thesis.
