Also, to present this paper to classmates and possibly other faculty. Due Dates: Outside of class discussion with P.Ray as to film/TV show choices and theory and potential direction of paper. Wednesday October 5th Submission of Final Paper by email to P.Ray and responding duo/trio. Tuesday, 6th December by 4pm.

Specific Requirements 1. The paper must have a creative and meaningful title, that hints at/points to your thesis and conclusion. 2. The paper should be broken into headings and sub-headings to guide the reader and improve readability. 3. You can use either APA or MLA as the writing style. 4. For a duo I am expecting 8 – 10 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font. For a trio, 10 – 12 pages. This does not include the bibliography. See more guidance below. 5. I will be looking for logical quote citations (5 – 7) and paraphrased citations (4 – 5) in the paper. 6. The Bibliography/Works Cited should have at minimum 8 sources that are clearly used for citations in the text.

7. The presentation should be organized, and each person should present for a similar time. Overall, you get 7 minutes for a duo and 10 minutes for a trio. You have 1 minute extra to set up. 8. The presentation should have useful pictures, clips, and text. Text should not go beyond two lines per main point. Main points should be animated and come on one at a times as you present them. 9. Clips used should not last more than 2 minutes of the overall presentation. 10. There will be time to discuss the duo/trios work after their presentation. Another duo/trio will be assigned the task of asking/engaging pertinent questions.

General Guidelines 1. Decide early on a theory that you believe is a good fit for the film or TV program you want to explore. I am open to you using similar theories, but I will limit this to one repeated theory per duo/trio. In other words, two duos could use Genre Theory and engage with completely different films/TV shows. 2. Remember your textbook has examples/ case studies that show you how to engage a film with a theory. You can use that to guide/help your approach. 3. The theory chosen does not have to be the theory you present on.

More importantly, it is a choice based on what might help you see and discuss an aspect of a film/TV program that is insightful to culture, an audience, and academics. And in so doing, help you confirm, develop, or challege the theory itself. 4. Meet with me to discuss your ideas. I will use this meeting to help focus and guide you. You can meet with me at several points as you proceed. 5. Your paper’s overall structure should follow the following pattern: a. Introduction (1 to 1.5 pages) – capturing the reason/importance for this analysis and a declaration of your thesis. You could also propose a research question and hypotheses.

A good introduction also has a preview of key areas to come. b. Theory Explanation (1.5 to 2 pages) – a brief explanation of key tenets of the theory which can also include its weakness. This is also a good place to elaborate on why this theory is worth considering as a frame for this film/TV show. c. Description and Analysis (2 to 3 pages) – using the formal elements of film/TV shows (mise-en-scène, cinematography etc.) discuss notable moments that are worthy of consideration and that stand out.

An example of this might be scenes that capture the essence of your theoretical argument. For instance, if you were exploring the suitability of Chicago as a fit for the genre of musical and the sub-genre of Show, you might highlight the opening and ending frames of “the show” where main characters are singing to a “real” audience and compare those moments to the Cell Block Tango (and other selected scenes) where there is no real audience. Instructions for Part 1: The Grain of the Voice The “grain of the voice” typically refers to an individual vocal timbre, or tone quality. It is what makes Bessie Smith’s voice distinct from Madonna’s, Rihanna’s, and so on. But, as we have seen, “grain of the voice” has a wider significance. For one thing, it can be a metaphor for any individualizing aspect of music that escapes easily described structures of meaning. And even in its more limited reference to voices, the vocal quality may interact with other musical elements, like form, rhythm, dynamics (volume), harmony, genre, etc.

Take James Brown’s iconic scream. Listen to the first three minutes of “Super Bad,” and pay attention not only the timbre of his screams, but how they relate to the form and change. This song has a verse and a bridge (he cries out “bridge!”), each containing its own groove. At the end of the first bridge, Brown unleashes two screams (at 2:21 and 2:25). Yes, the grain is recognizable as James Brown. But more than that, his screams join an important moment in the song’s form: they are the loudest and highest at the bridge’s end. From that climax they release the song back to a new verse while also summoning howling echoes from the saxophone soloist.

More can be said. But notice how even this brief description has linked the grain of the voice to relevant features and moments in the song. Read the above text. Don’t skip it. Then, choose two performers, one from EACH column below, and write a one to two-page paper (double-spaced text) or record a five to ten-minute video essay that reports on how the grain of each voice relates to specific features of their music. Maybe it intensifies them, challenges them, befits them, etc. The James Brown example focused on form and dynamics; you do not have to do the same.

You may compare/contrast them if you like, but that is not required. If you do compare two performers, do NOT spend time on the obvious (e.g., the fact that they are different). Criteria for grading: 1) Completeness: two selections, one from each column, and examples for each; 2) Makes a case: relevant connections between each “grain of the voice” and specific musical features; 3) Justified with detailed observations from the music. Instructions for Part 4: Imaginative Writing Choose one of the following people. Write about the proposed subject from their point of view. Write a minimum of one page double-spaced on the topic.
