Introduction: (one paragraph – 50 words) Your introduction should always explain to the reader what the purpose of your paper is, and how you are going to structure your assignment. This should be completed in one paragraph. Three aspects you should be sure that you include in your introduction: 1. “This paper will summarize and critique the article by Author A, entitled B.”

2. Be sure to state your own main argument, or thesis statement. For example, “In this paper I will argue that the author overstates the demise of states.” 3. “I will first summarize the author’s argument and then analyze the argument’s strength and weaknesses.” Summary of reading (approximately 200 words). This section makes up the bulk of your assignment. It should summarize the author’s argument Argument summary: 1. Start by clearly stating the author’s argument, but be sure to paraphrase the argument (don’t use quotes). For example, “Author A’s argument is …” Or “Author A argues that…”
