Essay 4: Theoretical Analysis of a Film or Novel (5-6 pages/400 points) Examine a film or novel through a specific theoretical lens by posing important theory-related questions related to topics in the film or novel that relate to your school of criticism, OR, find a critical review of a novel or film that utilizes a theoretical lens, then summarize and respond to the critic’s review, taking your own position on the critic’s interpretation. The Assignment: For this assignment, students will choose one theoretical approach with which to examine a movie of choice.

Theoretical Analysis of a Film

The essay must include a brief plot summary, and offer a thesis that answers the specific theory-related question(s) about the film (see example questions here: Theory Question Handout Download Theory Question Handout. The essay’s thesis should use a theoretical lens to illuminate particular perspectives, biases, and assumptions that underlie the movie’s story-telling. Your essay should explain how these underlying aspects affect the theme of the movie. Make an argument about the relationship between the film’s storytelling and the critical theory you have chosen.

You must support your theoretical argument about the film by explicating relevant examples from it, including significant themes or motifs, literary devices, and quotations/summaries/paraphrases from the movie. You must also use two to three high-quality sources outside of the movie, including at least one film review Requirements: · Your essay must possess a thesis statement that answers a specific theory-related question (or a series of related questions) about the movie or novel you have chosen. · To support your thesis, you must include direct evidence from the work and 2-3 external sources.
